The Youth and the European Union (EU): The Promotion of and Access to Information
On the 1st and 2nd of June 2018 over 8.000 young people from all over the world had the opportunity to participate in the European Youth Event (EYE) at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (France). Among those many people I had the pleasure to attend the event through the European Student Think Tank (EST) organization based in Brussels (Belgium), allowing me to get to know amazing and proactive individuals who are constantly working on initiatives across Europe.
During EYE, I attended activities which mostly focused on youth inclusion in decision-making processes at the European Union (EU), as well as on how to reinvent Europe by providing feedback and ideas on how to improve the EU. All working groups came up with creative and beautiful ideas. Nonetheless, I noticed that some of the solutions which they had presented actually already existed in a similar way, but nobody seemed to know about them at all. That is when I realized that there was an important issue which is not being tackled effectively yet: the promotion of and access to information. In this case, more specifically, simple and transparent access to the information that the EU, its institutions and supporters provide to the public, entailing all opportunities and tools which are potentially at the disposal of individuals, NGOs, and others, but are not well-known or not well-promoted, especially among local communities.
The EU institutions will always have to continuously keep improving by applying new ideas and methods. However, we cannot neglect that they have already done a lot for the youth. Therefore, in order to help this initiative and support young people to get to know what programmes, tools and other opportunities they have access to, my friends and I started developing an opportunity and resource platform called: the World of Opportunities. (In development).
If you are aware of tools and opportunities which are not very well-known, then send them to us through our feedback form.
I hope that the World of Opportunities resource platform will be useful to you and/or your colleagues. Updates will follow soon.
